A Submissive Heart

by Parth Pandya

[box]Two lovers, on either side of a river, in two different situations. What really happened? Parth Pandya writes a poem that evokes the beauty of the night and touches upon the workings of the human heart.[/box]

Tonight again
The moonlight breathes
A white breath
On the ripples of this manic water

Tonight again
The reed hinges on its roots
Holding on to the soil
In a sheer act of will

The hungry river
Will uproot it one day
“Let it be me,”
He wishes aloud, standing on the bank

Across the river,
A fire singes the air
Her tender flesh accenting
The night sky in misty white

The crackling of the pyre
Forges a gentle melody
With the waves
Lapping the shore

He wishes the current
Would claim him,
Would carry his failing legs,
Would walk his steps for him

But the river only took
That which would commit to it –
Fish, flotsam, flowers,
Logs, toxins, ashes

It would also take a heart
If it were to submit to it
But half-hearts were anathema
To one that knew no half-measures

So he blames the river
And bids her goodbye
Taking up residence
In the country of remorse

And so that love, slated for eternity
Becomes a story of mortal failings
One lover reduced to a heap of ashes
And the other consigned to a life of reason.

Parth Pandya is a passionate Tendulkar fan, diligent minion of the ‘evil empire’, persistent writer at http://parthp.blogspot.com, self-confessed Hindi movie geek, avid quizzer, awesome husband (for lack of a humbler adjective) and a thrilled father of a precocious three-year-old boy. He grew up in Mumbai and spent the last eleven years really growing up in the U.S. and is always looking to brighten up his day through good coffee and great puns.
