Trudging

by M.Mohankumar

When hope meets illusion in a long and tiring journey, it is a harrowing experience. M. Mohankumar captures this in his poem.

A sea of sterile brown
and still waves
as far as the eye can see.

You trudge on,
dragging scorched feet
and a mind heavy
with dead hopes.

Till your roving eyes
light upon
a patch of green
on the far horizon,
and you feel
all the excitement
of a marooned sailor
sighting a ship
on the high seas.

Promise of manna;
elixir of life;
deliverance.

You advance
with quickened steps.

It recedes.

Mohankumar has published seven volumes of poetry in English. His poems have appeared in almost all reputed literary magazines in print in India. His first collection of short stories in English will be brought out by Authorspress, Delhi shortly. Mohankumar retired as Chief secretary to Government of Kerala.
