Journey Back Home

by Rajlakshmi Pillai

At a soldier’s home, his family waits longingly for his return. Rajlakshmi Pillai pens a poem that highlights the emotions of a soldier’s journey back home.

Cattles have come home, so have birds
Twittering has stopped, so has meowing
She sat in her veranda and waited for that gleam
It’s late, you should come inside, someone said
She looked ahead into piercing sound of night
Then into her ‘home’ behind her
Both seemed so similar, without him beside her
He has gone away to protect borders
She is alone with their kid and his old mother, waiting anxiously
He had promised he will be here this week,
He hadn’t called or left a message, she wiped her eyes
Somewhere far, a soldier is getting ready to return home
In a box covered with tricolour, wreaths and respect
Finally, the journey to home has begun, the wait is over.
