Butterfly Effect

by M. Mohankumar

A man listening to music suddenly travels back in time – to the memory of a butterfly that he had chased as a young man. M. Mohankumar’s poem on the theme ‘Travel’, is about travel of a different kind.

Years ago,
as a young man,
he chased a butterfly
that lured him on,
never yielding.

At long last,
he gave it up
as un-get-at-able.
And slowly it faded
out of his mind

Now, on this dark
December night,
as he sits alone,
a hemisphere away,
snow falling all around,

listening to Dikshitar’s
Annapoorne Visalakshi
in sama raga,
a sudden tremor
shakes his heart.

‘Butterfly effect.’
he says to himself,
and rallying, goes on
listening to the music
plugged to his ears.

Mohankumar has published seven volumes of poetry in English. His poems have appeared in almost all reputed literary magazines in print in India. His first collection of short stories in English, ‘The Turning Point and Other Stories’ has been published by Authorspress, Delhi . Mohankumar retired as Chief secretary to Government of Kerala.
